    Photo-bashing is using an image editor to make photorealistic collages. Imagine a photograph. Like what you see? If you don’t, Google image search “giant sparkling moon” and put that in the background. If you’re in Photoshop, change the blend mode to put it behind the clouds, and put a hue/saturation adjustment layer to match colors. Or, with the new generative fill tool, you could have saved time and let AI do all that for you. But that feels like taking the art away from it, doesn’t it?

    Wait! When you Googled “giant sparkling moon,” did you use the first result? Check the fine print... this is an AI generated image! Your edit was doomed from the start. This raises questions. Why is dreamstime.com watermarking an AI generated image? If it’s royalty-free, why do they want your payment information to download? What was the image-making process of the credited author, Yuliya Rudzko? Was it a single prompt and click, or did they do some editing of their own?

    If you have qualms about AI, you might disable gen-AI in your search on Dreamstime (or Getty Images, Shutterstock, Adobe Stock...) and download a royalty-free stock photo instead. If you’re lazy, you could just copy-paste the image straight from your browser to Photoshop, and keep the watermark in (which would be funny). You could license a high-res photo for $499, or take a photo with your own camera. How about browsing social media, or Wikimedia Commons? Let image searching be part of your creative process.

    Architects model buildings in 3D to produce perspective views, then use software like Enscape or D5 to apply lighting and material textures, which can be touched up in Photoshop to add trees and people and cars. That’s not really photo-bashing. Before I knew rendering software, and before AI, I was truly bashing things together to create dismal, uncanny-valley scenes of mobile homes.

    For no good reason at all (filling time at a summer job), those telephone cables were painstakingly clone-stamped to run continuously over the fake, duplicated houses. Both driveways, the grassy mound behind the house, and the weird concrete stairs were manually perspective-warped bits of Google Streetview screenshots. I scrutinized every pixel of this low-res image - the profile of the trees, the thin black line on the roofs, the mysterious antennas and fence poles.

    I designed this calendar for the year 2026. Every month is a different theme. It can be printed in B&W on ordinary letter-size paper. I recommend stapling the top corners and drawing on it every day with a thick marker.

    Leafman's Laboratory is a comic made in a surreal "photo-bashing" style about escaping an enormous underground facility. The second chapter is in the works.

    The Way Through / The Way Out: A Road Musical

    This is an experimental play by George Danison and S Vincent Leggett. It was performed at Sweetums Showcase #1 on 2025-10-25 and filmed by Matilda Morales. It features our dear friends Etan Khlevnoy (as cashier/creature) and Leena Gupta (as the voice of herself). It’s kind of a story and kind of a bunch of poems.

    George built the set and played the main role. Vince wrote the words and created the audio tracks and sang an original song at the end. Vince also edited this video (however George drew the cars). Thanks to Archie and the Sweetums.
